Pet Car Anxiety

pet-car-anxietyMany pets experience anxiety when traveling by car. Symptoms may include drooling, vomiting, vocalization or endless movement.  This makes the car ride stressful for everyone.

Condition your pets for traveling by going for short trips around town to fun places like the dog park or a walk in the woods. Thinking about a fun destination will help reduce anxiety. Pet, praise, and give them treats each time they get in the car. Do this daily, or every other day, for a few weeks.

There are certain products and tricks you can try. Providing your dog with a favorite toy, or an article of clothing with your scent may help. This can calm your dog and make the car experience more enjoyable.

There are several natural products that have a calming effect.; These include:

  • Putting fresh lavender in the car 30 minutes prior to departure
  • Adaptil sprays and collars that contain a synthetic pheremone
  • Rescue Remedy is a combination of flower essences
  • Also Valerian root, and  magnesium may help

Some dogs are less anxious if they feel more secure in the car. Travel crates, carriers, and travel harnesses are all great ways to help your dog feel more secure during travel.

Sometimes, no matter how much acclimation and calming you try, your dog may still need medication. Consult your veterinarian for an examination and discussion about medications to relieve anxiety and help your dog enjoy car travel.

Preparing for travel can make the trip more enjoyable for all.
