Critical Care

Do you know who to call in the event of a pet emergency?

As a loving pet parent, you never want to see your four-legged family member in distress. Unfortunately, unexpected illnesses and sudden accidents can occur at any time. The way you handle these types of situations can make all the difference in the world for your loved one. At Westside Pet Hospital, we want you to know that you’ve got a dedicated team in your corner. You can rest easy knowing that we’ll be there for you in your time of need.

Our hospital is equipped to provide life-saving critical care at a moment’s notice. With staff members who are experienced in emergency medicine, we can quickly diagnose the problem and deliver the most timely and effective care. Most importantly, we will handle your companion’s case with the utmost compassion, doing everything within our power to achieve a positive outcome.

Some of the signs that your pet may require urgent medical attention include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Ingestion of a foreign object or toxic substance
  • Broken bones
  • Cuts, lacerations or puncture wounds
  • Vomiting or diarrhea lasting longer than 24 hours
  • Bleeding
  • Trauma, such as a fall or being hit by a car
  • Swollen or tender abdomen
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Lameness
  • Disorientation
  • Foaming at the mouth
  • Convulsions/seizures
  • Loss of consciousness

If you notice your companion exhibiting any of these signs, it’s time to call for help right away. At Westside Pet Hospital, we always recommend calling ahead when an emergency occurs. This allows us to evaluate the situation and provide first aid instructions over the phone. It also lets us prepare the hospital and other team members for your pet’s arrival. Of course, should the nature of your pet’s emergency not allow time for a phone call, don’t hesitate to come directly in for immediate attention.

We sincerely hope you never experience the need for urgent veterinary care. If you do, however, we want you to know who to call. The team at Westside Pet Hospital will be here to provide the highest level of care available. You can count on us!

I can't say enough about Dr. shaw and the Westside Pet Hospital. The staff is so lovely. They obviously care about what they do. Dr. Shaw is just awesome. He spends an incredible amount of time with you and your pet, is thorough and gives you a lot of information. I love the fact that he uses standard veterinary care as well as being trained in accupuncture and alternative medicine. The practice is also spotless! Our Bernese Mountain dog and our 2 cats are patients and they are quite pleased to see Dr. Shaw. I highly recommend Westside Pet Hospital!

We drove down from the Portland area to have gold bead implants done on our Puppy for hip dysplasia. The staff was great and Dr Shaw was very kind. This was yesterday. This morning our puppy got up from bed and I can already see a difference in her limp. She is happier and has more energy than I have seen in a long time. That is one day! I am so happy to see her so happy. Can't wait to see how she continues to improve. Thank you, Dr Shaw!!! :)
